The quarterly installments of the Truth and Culture series, held at the Triangle Center for Family Development in Cary , provide a forum where “hot topics” in the culture can be addressed in light of the truth of the Catholic faith. This is a men’s-only apostolate because in general, there are very few opportunities for men to obtain Catholic intellectual formation in an environment that also fosters fellowship. Tickets are NOW available for the final installment of Truth and Culture 2007.

Date and Time: Wednesday, December 12; 6:30pm-9:00pm.

Speaker: Bob Luddy

Title of Talk: The Truth about Public Schools

Rarely does a week go by without some shocking story in the news concerning the public education system. Whether it is declining test scores or the decision to make contraceptives available to middle school children – without parental consent required!

What in the world is happening with public education and why does it seem to be "unwinding" so quickly?

Some of the questions that will be addressed in this final installment for 2007 include:

  1. How did we get to this point in the "evolution" of public school education?
  2. What ideologies and agendas are influencing and shaping public education (particularly k-12)?
  3. Are these ideologies and agendas compatible with the truth about the human person that the Church presents to us?
  4. What are the goals of the current education system and what should they be?
  5. What is the difference between education and formation?
  6. What are the solutions to the problems with public education and how does the truth of the Catholic faith assist these solutions?

Our speaker is Bob Luddy. Bob is the founder and CEO of Captive Air in Raleigh (the nation’s largest and most well-respected manufacturer of commercial kitchen ventilation systems).

Bob is a strong advocate of excellent education, and has employed the same entreprenuerial spirit, vision and commitment to establish schools which help youth develop good character and reasoning skills.

In 1998, Bob established the Franklin Academy, an award-winning public charter school in Wake Forest, which now serves over 1,000 K-12 students. In 2001, Bob founded St. Thomas More Academy in Raleigh, a classical, college preparatory high school. In 2006, the academy was named one of the 50 best Catholic high schools in the country (and one of the top 25 for academic excellence, alone). In 2007, Bob opened Thales Academy in Raleigh, the first in a network of private community schools offering a high-quality K-8 education at low-cost tuition.

Twice in the last few months Bob has been a guest on The Bill LuMaye talk radio program (WPTF) to discuss education. He speaks regularly on this topic – most recently in Washington D.C. where he spoke on Public Education - threats to our society - at the Americans for Prosperity Conference.

Bob is an excellent example of a well-integrated Catholic man who is using his gifts, talents and esources to pursue a cause that he is passionate about - in this case education.

You won't want to miss this climactic final installment!
